Amy - Do I need a car seat?

My husband and I live on the UWS and don't have a car. And I learned on my St. Luke's hospital tour that we don't need to have a car seat to leave the hospital if we aren't leaving in a private car (which we won't be). So, do I need to buy a car seat for the odd chance that we might take a taxi with the baby once every three or four months?

A car seat is necessary for the baby in all vehicles - whether the car
is a taxi, a rental or one's own. The safety issue is the same. If
you can borrow one for a taxi then of course you don't need to own
one. But regardless of where it comes from, a seat should be provided
for the baby for each and every ride he/she takes.
