I have found the most caring and professional pediatrician who I want to tell you about. I have heard so many women at the Prenatal Yoga Center talking about how unhappy they are with their current Dr. and that's how I was until I met Dr Sonia Gidwani. Her office is in the same building as the Upper Breast Side 135 West 70th Street between Columbus and Amsterdam/Broadway). (212) 496 -Kids (5437)
You're at that building all the time any way to get all things baby... Most importantly, she has brought back the "old fashioned, care about your patients" approach that I found was lacking at the big practices. Here is a list of what I have told my closest friends about her so I hope this is helpful so you can decide if she is the right Dr. for you:
1. She always answers my calls or calls back RIGHT AWAY. She uses technology to track her down and makes sure that you get answers. For months, I didn't even need to take my daughter in since she offered to look at photos via e-mail or listen to my concerns and help me over the phone (no co-pay, no paper work, no drama). She e-mails and calls and you can even set up appointments over e-mail. As a former corporate girl, I find this very efficient.
2. Her website is full of useful health info and her stance on fevers etc. I looked that up before calling her when my daughter had a fever and it saved me from a late night wait and see. I knew her stance, it's on the site, and I was calmed. All the forms you need are also there so you can save time sitting in the office, though I've never waited longer than 5 minutes.
3. Her office is "Green". She has an area dedicated to what she has prioritized in protecting our children when she created this new office space in 2007. I think it is imperative that a Dr. be in the know about the environment and how it affects our children. She's thinking about them long term not just while the insurance checks are coming in. The office in CLEAN! Also, everything is paperless and digitally recorded.
4. Dr. Gidwani knows about food as well as medicine. I used to ask my former Dr. about nutrition and organics, is a pine nut a nut? etc. No answers. Dr. Gidwani is well-read, she told my husband and me at a getting to know you session, that she receives regular summaries of the latest findings and makes it a point to be current. I found other doctors were fine only with what they knew... not what was news...
5. She has her own children and a lovely husband who I met in the office once. It felt like a family practice and they take a lot of pride in caring for their patients. I've even had Sat. appointments which is great so my husband gets to be a part of my daughter's medical life. During the week, his work schedule is demanding like most NYC partners.
6. I respect her immunization stance so talk with her directly about your thoughts. She puts like into perspective since she grew up in India and has much experience.
