Can I practice yoga?

I was wondering if I can start practicing yoga again. I am only 16 weeks pregnant, but it has been a rough time. I spent the first two months with extreme morning sickness and now three weeks ago I slipped in the grocery store. I have been put on bed rest. Five days ago I finally stopped spotting, but the doctors say I need to take another month at home just to be safe. Needless to say my body is screaming for some kind of movement, especially stretching. As a daily yoga practicer before pregnancy I am not used to being still, not to mention lying still, and I have started to have back and knee pains as well as tension headaches.

Of course I dont want to put myself at risk. Are there any positions I might be able to try or should avoid? Can I try a relaxed version of my yoga routine? Or should I just wait?

Thank you for creating a space to ask these questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Chandra

Please don’t take risk because you have being fallen from stairs also but for your tension you can try to do meditation and simple yoga.

If you have been practising yoga before being pregnant, then I think you could continue. However, as you have been put on bed rest, really listen to your doctor and also take it easy.

If you are not sure what poses would be right for you as you are pregnant, then perhaps consult an experienced teacher or get a good book on the subject. Many of the poses you may have been used to doing, are not suitable now.

Resting yoga poses with props, ie. bolsters, straps, etc. can help. Just doing a few poses which lengthen the spine, dog pose with head resting on brick, baddha konasana, lying on back with support (bolster), with feet together and knees apart is a really good one for pregnancy.
Also lying with your legs up the wall (on a bolster - buttocks), or use a cushion under the buttocks, and relax your legs up the wall. This simple pose (and all inversions) is good for pregnancy, and helps to keep the baby safe.

As for morning sickness, hope you are over that now. I have also heard that being too yin, eating too many fruits, juices etc. can give you morning sickness. Eat more yang food, miso soup is great.

You can start but there are some moves which you should avoid , which are stretching your tomach or related to the stomach .

I think there is no problem if some one stop yoga for some time..
So we must avoid the yoga during critical time and continue yoga after these days..

If you are new to yoga and pregnant, ask your doctor or midwife if a prenatal yoga class would benefit you. However, if you have high blood pressure or other pregnancy complications, it is extremely important to check with your health care practitioner first before starting or continuing yoga.
